Doctor of Political Sciences, Chief  Researcher, Head of the Center “Europe-Middle East” of the European Security Division of the IE RAS (since 2018). In 1976 graduated from the Faculty of International Relations at MGIMO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR with a degree in International Relations. In 1979 finished postgraduate studies at IMEMO of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (in absentia).

Labor activity: editor of the “Mir and Progress” radio station of the USSR State Radio and Television (1976-1979); Researcher, Israeli Studies Department, Institute of Oriental Studies, USSR Academy of Sciences (1979-1982); employee of the Embassy of the USSR in Tunisia (1982-1985); Head of the Middle East Sector, “Overseas Magazine” (1985-1988); senior correspondent of the Department of International Affairs of the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda (1988-1989); Head of the KP Bureau in the Middle East and North Africa (1989-1991 in Algeria, 1991-1997 in Cairo); international observer of the Kommersant newspaper, Expert magazine, Izvestia newspaper (1997-2002); Head of the Center for Analysis of Middle East Conflicts, ISK RAS (2002-2018).

Research interests: candidate of historical sciences (in 1979 at IMEMO defended his thesis on “The problem of creating a Palestinian state”), doctor of political sciences (in 2009 defended his thesis on ““Interaction between the strategies of Russia and the USA in the Greater Middle East: problems of cooperation and rivalry”). Research topics - Middle East conflicts, relations in the triangle Euro-Atlantic-Russia-Middle East.

Author of  5 monographs and more than 80 articles in Russian and foreign scientific journals.
